Are Home Teeth Whitening Kits Effective?

Teeth Whitening Comparison

In the field of cosmetic dentistry, patients are always asking how to get whiter teeth.  Home teeth whitening kits have increased in popularity as more and more people aim for that "Hollywood" white smile.  But often it leaves patients asking two questions...

  1. Are home teeth whitening kits safe?
  2. Are they as effective as professional in-office whitening systems?

In terms of patient safety, home whitening kits are relatively benign with no known links to major health issues.  However, patients are advised to carefully follow product directions to prevent damage to the gums and tooth enamel.

Younger patients who are going through puberity and have their permanent teeth coming in are discouraged from overuse of whitening products.  The young permanent tooth enamel is still maturing and can be quite vulnerable to the substances within the whitening kits.

In terms of effectiveness, most of the whitening kits should achieve their advertised level of brightness, but usually differ in their application and length of time for desired results. The percentage of active bleaching agent in home teeth whitening kits is usually half the amount found in in-office whitening systems.  This means that home whitening systems will require more application sessions and time to achieve the same level of brightness results offered in office.

Our dental team is professionally trained and experienced in delivering the white natural smiles our patients hope to achieve. The office setting allows for a more controlled environment and ensures we match and blend tooth shades, especially for patients with implants and other restorations.

If you have any questions about a specific home teeth whitening kit or in-office whitening system, we encourage you to ask our team or informed dental professional.  We provide our patients with both options at our office to meet their desired brightness level, time criteria, and budget.

At the end of the day, we want what's best for you and to get that natural healthy looking smile you deserve!  If you have any questions, give us a call at (916)442-8911 or leave a comment in the section below.
