Dental Implants Sacramento

The dentists at Miyasaki Dental utilize dental implants to replace missing teeth. After a thorough evaluation and discussion about your goals, our dentist, Dr. Michael Miyasaki, will discuss which dental implants would be best for you.

You may be surprised to learn that millions of Americans face tooth loss each year, and regardless of why you’re missing teeth, we can help. You need not suffer the embarrassment and discomfort of missing teeth any longer because there are many ways we can replace missing teeth to improve your oral health and emotional well-being and restore the beautiful smile you have been missing.

Types of Dental Implants

Endosteal implants, or endosseous implants, are the most common type of dental implant and use small screws that are placed into your jawbone and serve as an artificial root to hold the replacement tooth. Compared to stainless steel, titanium is stronger and lighter while being corrosion-resistant.

The Dental Implant Process and Implant Dentures

The endosteal implant process is done in stages and will take several visits over several months. The resulting smile with fully functioning teeth is worth the time invested. The process will begin with a consultation with Dr. Miyasaki.

A bone graft may be done to add volume and density to your jaw where bone loss has occurred. Your restorative dentist will numb the area with local anesthetic and create a small incision in your gums. Gum tissue is moved back slightly so that the jawbone is visible. Then, bone grafting material is added to repair this defect. The bone graft may be covered with a membrane for additional protection, and then the gum tissue is repositioned, and the incision is closed.

Once numb, a small incision is made in the gum, and the titanium screw for the implant is placed. On top of the screw, an abutment is used, which extends the metal post where the new tooth is attached. Your jawbone will grow into the implant, known as osseointegration; this process can take two to six months until the tooth is fully supported.

Once the titanium implant has taken hold, the abutment will be attached. Two weeks after the abutment is placed, an impression will be taken for the dental crown. Several teeth can be replaced by one implant if bridged together.

Implant-supported dentures are another option for tooth replacement.

Dental implants are embedded directly into the jawbone, providing an extremely stable foundation for an individual crown or a full denture appliance.

The denture itself is still made from acrylic. However, rather than resting on the gum like traditional dentures, implant dentures hook onto the implants using a latching system, allowing the denture to function exactly like regular teeth. There is no slippage while talking or eating with implant-supported dentures.

Implant-supported dentures can be either removable or permanent; your restorative dentist will discuss these options:

  • Removable: Removable dentures affixed to conventional dental implants, mini-implants, or a bar connected to the implants. They are removed to eat or for cleaning.
  • Non-Removable: These dentures permanently attach to the implant, and you clean them by brushing and flossing like regular teeth. Only a dentist can remove this type of denture.

Implant Bridges

People with multiple teeth missing might consider getting an implant bridge. An implant bridge uses dental implants placed in your jawbone as a base. The restorations are the visible portion on the top, and the teeth are replaced. These can preserve the nearby teeth and preserve the jawbone, and an implant bridge can maintain the shape of your smile.

A removable bridge attaches to the nearby teeth and can be removed for cleaning. However, an implant bridge connects to the implants in the jawbone, making it permanent and non-removable.

Mini Dental Implants

As the name indicates, mini dental implants are a smaller version of conventional dental implants. Mini dental implant screws are about half as wide in diameter and don’t go as deep into the jaw. Mini implants can stand up to daily use without issue and are more affordable than traditional implants. Mini implants are often more comfortable for patients, requiring less healing time and fewer appointments.
