Restorative dentistry focuses on restoring the function of your mouth and jaw by repairing damaged teeth and replacing missing teeth. Many different dental procedures are considered restorative dentistry. Our restorative dentists at Miyasaki Dental practice restorative dentistry daily to repair dental problems and restore function to people’s oral structures.
Dr. Michael Miysaki, our dentist, may perform something as simple as a filling or place dental implants to replace missing teeth or teeth that were so damaged that they had to be extracted. No two people will ever require the same restorative dentistry treatment plan.

Some of the most common restorative dentistry procedures performed are:
- Fillings: Filling a tooth with a cavity as soon as it’s discovered will help avoid a root canal.
- Dental crowns: A damaged tooth can be saved with a crown, commonly called a “cap.” When crowns are placed, the top part of the tooth is shaved down, and the crown is placed over the top. It looks and functions just like your natural tooth; crowns allow the tooth’s natural root to stay in place.
- Dental bridges: A dental bridge is an artificial tooth suspended between two crowns. The bridge is held in place by crowns over the existing teeth on either side of the bridge or by dental implants.
- Dental inlays are typically made of ceramic, porcelain, or resin composite material. They are designed to fit perfectly into a hole in a tooth created by injury or decay. Inlays are very strong and may be the best option instead of a filling.
- Onlays: These are often used to restore teeth with damaged or decayed cusps. They can be used when a filling does not provide enough structural strength to keep the tooth from breaking. Onlays are usually much larger than inlays. Some of the biggest onlays cover all four cusps of the tooth but not its sides.
- Root canal therapy (endodontics): Many years ago, root canals were considered a painful procedure that people dreaded. That is no longer the case due to advances in technique and technology. A root canal may be indicated when a cavity goes deep enough into the tooth to expose the soft pulp inside it. During a root canal, your dentist will clean out all of the soft pulp from inside the tooth and the root canal, rinse out the infection, and fill the inside with composite material like what is used in a cavity filling. This prevents infection and saves the tooth.
- Dentures: The number of denture options has grown in recent years. Our restorative dentists will explain which dentures would be best for you.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS
Thorough Care & Education: A Dental Experience Like No Other
I’ve never had such thorough care as a new patient! They took such great interest in my history and gave me a comprehensive exam. The whole time they were educating me on what they were looking for and what they found. I even learned something new about the way my jaw works, which no dentist has ever shared with me before. They were warm, caring and very thorough. I have a history of dental issues and I feel confident that they can work with my existing treatments and keep me in tip top shape. Thank you!

- Reduce the risk of dental issues in the future
- Improve the aesthetics of your smile
- Enhance self-confidence

- Preserve jawbone density: Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant preserves the bone density in your jaw. When teeth are missing, the part of the jaw that held them in place begins to weaken and eventually cease being supportive.
When that happens, a bone graft procedure may be required to replace it with an implant. When missing teeth are replaced right away, the chance of suffering bone loss is reduced, which means the bone graft becomes less necessary.
We understand this is a lot of information, and we want you to ask our dentistry team as many questions as you have. Please read below to learn more about dental implants and bone grafting, and remember that missing teeth does not mean you must have dental implants. There may be many other treatment options better suited for your particular problem.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a complete artificial tooth and root system. The implant root is made of titanium, a biocompatible metal that bonds with the jaw bone to form a stable hold. The root is surgically placed in the jaw, and a dental crown is attached to the top. The dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth, so it is considered the best tooth replacement option.
Bone Grafting
Dental bone grafting is necessary when there is insufficient bone mass to support and stabilize dental implants or dentures. Bone loss or low bone mass can be caused by several things, including trauma to the bone, periodontal disease, or even genetics. Atrophy following tooth loss is the most common cause of loss of jawbone density.
The bone grafting procedure is more straightforward than you may think. We will explain what is happening every step of the way, and numbing agents will prevent you from feeling pain. Once the area is sufficiently numb, a small incision will be made through the gum so our dentists can access the area where the bone loss has occurred.
The bone grafting material goes directly onto the bone loss area under your gum tissue; then, it will be covered with a membrane to secure it. After a few small stitches, the procedure is complete. Your bone graft will heal, allowing for bone restoration as if the tooth were still there.
